Dual Shaders

Shading is my favorite part of fountain pen ink. It’s part of why I started using fountain pens in the first place. One of the newest trends in ink seems to be inks that shade a different color than their base color. I call these inks dual shaders, but that’s my own term-there’s probably a better one out there. One of the best examples I can think of is Sailor Ink Studio 123. It’s a grey ink that shades purple and green. Seriously, it’s an amazing ink. The downside to these inks is that they can be very light in color, and thus hard to read. Let’s take a closer look at some of them.

Some of the best dual shaders I can think of!

Sailor Ink Studio 123 and 162 are twins-123 is grey that shades purple and green and 162 is green that shades grey and purple. Sailor Ink Studio 130 and 173 are another set of twins. 130 is pink that shades orange, and 173 is orange that shades pink. If you weren’t sure where to start with the Sailor Ink Studio inks these 4 are all great ones.

Troublemaker Kelp Tea is an olive green that shades brown and even a bit of pink in large swabs.

Vinta Sirena is a pale minty green that shades pink, grey and brown.

Sailor Ink Studio 142 and 150 are another set of twins. 143 is blue that shades purple and 150 is purple that shades blue. 442 is blue that shades purple and even a bit of green too.

Vinta Perya shades from blue to pink and green.

Troublemaker Milky Ocean is a pale blue that shades to different purples.

tbm-abalone-2.jpg

Troublemaker Abalone is like Milky Ocean, but it’s a darker blue that also shades purple.

Sailor Manyo Haha is a pale blue that shades purple and green. I love this ink so much!

sm-nekoyanagi-3.jpg

Sailor Manyo Nekoyanagi is Haha’s twin. It’s a pale purple that shades pale blue and minty green. This one is another favorite of mine.

I’m loving this shading trend, but a lot of them can be hard to read. I want inks that can be clearly read but gimme all the shading! What’s your favorite shading ink?
