Ink Review #1143: Pelikan Edelstein Moonstone

pe-moonstone-2.jpg

Let’s take a look at Pelikan’s Ink of the Year for 2020, Moonstone. I purchased my sample of ink from Vanness Pens.

pe-moonstone-1.jpg

The color:

Moonstone is a pale silvery grey.

Swabs:

pe-moonstone-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink looks a bit more yellow and complex.

pe-moonstone-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium-some of the ink washed away, but you might still be able to read it.

Feathering: None

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: None

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper there was some feathering in most nib sizes but no bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

pe-moonstone-s-1.jpg

Moonstone is a bit lighter than Montblanc Spider Gray, and less blue than Diamine Silver Fox. Click here to see the Pelikan inks together, and click here to see the grey inks together.

Longer writing:

pe-moonstone-s-2.jpg

I used a Franklin-Christoph 45 Vanness with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink had a drier than average flow. Since this broad nib is pretty wet it did fine with this ink, but I would probably only use it in wet nibs.

Overall, it’s a nice neutral grey, but there’s nothing about it that wows me. The flow is a bit drier than I prefer, but that can be overcome with a wet nib. I’m glad I tried it, but I don’t need a full bottle of this one.

Ink Review #825: Pelikan Edelstein Ruby

pe-ruby-2.jpg

Pelikan Edelstein Ruby is part of the Edelstein standard lineup, one I’ve been meaning to try for a long time. Thanks to Pen Chalet for sending a bottle over for review.

pe-ruby-1.jpg

The color:

Ruby is a medium red with a slight pink tone.

Swabs:

pe-ruby-3.jpg

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink turns brown where pooled, but it doesn’t actually sheen.

pe-ruby-4.jpg

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm.

Dry time: 20 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Low-there was some feathering in the flex nib on Rhodia.

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-there was some bleeding in the flex nib.

Other properties: low shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On Staples 24 lb copy paper the ink feathered in all nib sizes and had a little bit of bleeding.

Comparison Swabs:

pe-ruby-s-1.jpg

Ruby reminds me of Sailor Ink Studio 530. Click here to see the Pelikan inks together, and click here to see the red inks together.

Longer Writing:

pe-ruby-s-2.jpg

I used a Pilot Vanishing Point Crimson Sunrise with a broad nib on Midori MD. The ink had a slightly dry flow. After about 8 lines I primed the feed a bit because it just felt too dry.

Overall, I like the slight pink tone to it. It does have a bit more bleeding and feathering than I like, but I do enjoy the color. I need to get some of this year’s Pelikan Edelstein Star Ruby so I can see how it compares to Ruby.
